What does a county tax assessor or collector do?

The Tax Assessor-Collector is in charge of calculating and collecting taxes from and for the county, including collecting taxes from schools, cities, property, sold automobiles, and miscellaneous fees. If any taxing mathematical errors occur, the Tax Assessor-Collector is responsible for overseeing corrections. He is also in charge of managing vehicle and boat title transfers, registrations, and licenses. As the designated voter registrar, the Tax Assessor-Collector distributes and receives voter registration applications and manages lists of the voter registrations. Another job of the Tax Assessor-Collector is to assess the value of a piece of property and record how much it should be taxed on the appraisal roll for tax purposes. The procedures of specific tasks for Tax Assessor-Collectors are written down in the Local Government Code in chapter 130.
