ELECTED OFFICIAL JOB DESCRIPTION

COUNTY SHERIFF

What does a county sheriff do?

Before the County Sheriff can perform the duties of office, he is required to create specific bonds, as explained in the Local Government Code in chapter 85. As the chief law enforcement officer of his county, the County Sheriff oversees and manages his county’s law enforcement department, and sometimes supplies law enforcement to nearby municipalities without police departments. The County Sheriff operates the county jail, can assign guards to protect prisoners and the jail, enforces the state’s criminal laws, looks into crimes, monitors deputies, implements traffic laws, and executes judgements. Other duties include writing and serving writs, eviction notices, protection orders, and warrants.
