One of the roles of the Justice of the Peace is being the leader and having jurisdiction over the small claims court and the justice court, which is appointed in the Government Code in chapter 27. In those courts, only Class C misdemeanor cases or civil cases with disputed money under $20,000 are presented. The Justice of the Peace can conduct hearings over the suspension of driver licenses, issue arrests and search warrants, assist in investigations, manage marriage ceremonies, and hear landlord/tenant disputes, truancy cases, and traffic cases. He also keeps various records, including criminal trials, expense reports, writs, collection fees, and financial transactions of his office. With the deceased, the Justice of the Peace is able to identify the cause of death, grants requests for removing organs, and permits transplanting body parts.
