ELECTED OFFICIAL JOB DESCRIPTION

COUNTY JUDGE

What does a county judge do?

In the Texas Constitution, Article 5, Section 15-16, the County Judge’s responsibilities are stated. The County Judge is the leading officer and judge of the County Court, is able to issue writs required to enforce his authority, leads the county in administrative tasks, and serves as head of emergency management. As a large county with around 350,000 people, Galveston County has County Courts at Law, each with a judge, to take civil cases. This helps the County Judge from needing to handle all of the cases alone, but he still presides over the county courts. A few of the administrative duties of a County Judge cover managing hearings for beer and wine license applications, announcing election notices, calling the elections, and tallying the total votes in the elections. Being the county’s Emergency Management Director, the County Judge appoints the Emergency Management Coordinator to prepare for danger, is the head of civil defense and disaster relief, and is the one to put the county’s emergency plan into movement.
