ELECTED OFFICIAL JOB DESCRIPTION

COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

What does a district attorney do?

After a case is investigated and filed, the District Attorney will represent his state and the victim in court of a criminal case. First, he gathers and inspects valid evidence of the crime that will be used as evidence and decides if the charges will be brought to court or dismissed. Next, working with the Defense Attorney, the District Attorney chooses a jury and presents the case by showing the evidence found and the witness testimonies given. After that, he can recommend the type of treatment the criminal receives and if the culprit should be put through a rehabilitative program or be sentenced to prison. The District Attorney partners with other law enforcement officers when investigating criminal cases and manages his county’s District Attorney office and the attorneys who work there. Along with maintaining public court records, the District Attorney writes and confirms complaints. The job of a District Attorney is described throughout chapter 43 of the Government Code.
